In the Becastled DLC, more than 40 new traits have been added to encourage players to build their strategy around the circumstances of each individual run. The traits are divided into three rarities: Common, Uncommon, and Rare, with rarer options becoming available after a Blood Moon. The simplest traits provide a small economic boost or increase unit health, but more interesting options offer a stronger effect in exchange for a meaningful restriction. For example, Master of the Bow forces players to use only archers but significantly increases their damage, while Manifest Destiny reduces mood but allows players to acquire several upcoming zones for free. The combinations of traits start to come into play, allowing players to create unique and memorable runs. The system was balanced through internal playtests and formulas in Google Sheets, taking into account individual values and interactions between different effects. The goal is to make players respond to what they get instead of repeating the same strategy every time, and to create decisions that can lead to memorable runs. The DLC also adds two new unit types: Mages and Clerics, which can be recruited from the new Mage School. Mages are designed around high risk and high potential impact, dealing a huge amount of damage but being vulnerable to enemy attacks, while Clerics provide healing and can be particularly useful for completing the game without losing a single unit. The new units and traits aim to create a more dynamic and challenging experience for players.
