The upcoming Call of Duty movie, directed by Peter Berg, aims to capture the spirit of the Modern Warfare universe by showing the cost of war, according to Berg. The film will feature lots of guns and violence, but also heart and soul. Berg stated that the game's characters are complicated humans, not cartoon characters, and the storylines are nuanced, with a real soul to the universe.
The movie will respect the complexity of the game's themes, unlike a simple 'shoot them all up and shoot popcorn' film. Berg believes that the Call of Duty movie's writer, Taylor Sheridan, understands this as well, and the film will have a strong soul and consequence of war. Sheridan's work in the military/war space, such as the film Sicario, suggests that he is capable of creating a movie that explores moral grey areas.
Berg's own experience directing movies based on real-world tragedies, including Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day, also suggests that he is well-equipped to handle the complex themes of the Call of Duty movie. The Call of Duty movie is set for release in June 2028.
