Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is gearing up for a second year of action with new courses, modes, and characters joining the game. The real headline act is the new cars coming to it, based on the Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast consoles. Each vehicle expertly blends the design of that classic gaming hardware into a lean-and-mean racing machine, with the Dreamcast car featuring the rounded form of the original console and the Saturn car sporting angular silhouettes and subdued tones.
The development team recreated the Dreamcast’s Visual Memory Unit using original reference data from that era, and designed the cars to instantly remind players of each console. The team explained that they translated rounded forms into fenders and nose sections, while angular lines became body panels and hoods, adding the sense of speed expected from a racing machine. The Sega Console cars will be available in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, along with a new Duel Mode that offers a different experience from the standard 12-player races.
