The Game Club, a New York-based startup, is celebrating its first anniversary by highlighting its success in bringing people together through video games, tackling social isolation in the process. The community has welcomed over 1,000 people in its first year, with in-person meetups now taking place across six countries. Inspired by traditional book clubs, members play the same game each month before discussing their experiences in small groups, often leading to more personal conversations about their perspectives, memories, and experiences.
For members like Simon, the impact is personal, providing a sense of community and a reason to meet with people, especially for those who spend a lot of time alone. A 2024 Harvard study found that 21% of American adults experienced serious loneliness, highlighting the growing need for meaningful social connections. The Game Club's approach challenges the assumption that video games are antisocial, instead using them to create shared experiences and friendships.
Each month, the Club selects an overlooked game or underrated classic, giving members the opportunity to discover great games they might otherwise have missed. The founders, Guy Blomberg and Shay Leighton, plan to expand the community worldwide, helping more people discover great games and make new friends.
