Nagoshi Studio, a NetEase-backed studio founded by Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, has officially closed after months of speculation, according to Japan’s Official Gazette Kanpo, which listed the studio in its latest company dissolutions on Monday. The studio was formed in 2021 and was working on an action game called Gang of Dragon, starring Ma Dong-seok. Nagoshi Studio was told in March that NetEase intended to cut off funding for the project after discovering it needed an additional ¥7 billion ($44.4 million) to reach completion. The studio is the latest casualty of NetEase’s decision to scale back its international game development operations, following the closure of several other studios, including T-Minus, FPC, and Bad Brain, and the split from Vancouver-based Worlds Untold and Seattle-based Jar of Sparks.
