Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: The Definitive Edition is a return I enjoy while still wishing Rockstar had gone further. The city remains irresistible, Tommy's ambition still gives the campaign direction and the updated controls make the experience more approachable. Those qualities bring me to 9/10. They do not remove the feeling that Vice City deserves a remake, rather than another opportunity to live within the limits of a remaster.

The atmosphere survives

The strongest reason to return is the same one that made the original memorable: the complete personality of the setting. Colour, music and criminal excess belong together here. A simple drive can provide more enjoyment than a complicated objective in a less distinctive world. Vice City understands the pleasure of occupying its own atmosphere.

Tommy provides a suitably forceful centre. His progress through the city's criminal interests gives the adventure an appetite for expansion, making advancement feel connected to a character's ambitions. That structure remains satisfying even when the player already knows where the larger journey is going.

A more comfortable return

The modernised controls and targeting make a meaningful difference to my enjoyment. They do not need to reinvent the city to improve the time spent inside it. Reducing the friction of an older interaction can be enough to restore the momentum that made the original appealing.

The presentation offers another reason to revisit familiar places, although visual updating is only one part of what I want from a return. A classic with such a strong mood needs to feel right as well as look clearer. My enthusiasm comes from the combination of the surviving original and the practical improvements, rather than the assumption that newer automatically means better.

The larger opportunity

What remains familiar is also where the limitation lies. The underlying structure still belongs to an older game. A remaster can make that structure easier to approach, but it cannot fully explore what the city and its story might become with deeper reconstruction.

That is why the wish for a remake survives a high score. Enjoying this edition does not mean I believe it represents the most ambitious treatment possible. I want a version that preserves Vice City's personality while reconsidering its interactions with the confidence of a genuinely new production.

Verdict

A 9/10 return to a wonderful classic, helped by improvements that make playing it more comfortable. The atmosphere remains the star, and Tommy's journey still carries the campaign. This edition is a satisfying way back into the city. A full remake could be a much more exciting reason to return again.

Score: 9/10
