Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: The Definitive Edition carries an extraordinary game inside an update that I wish had been more ambitious. CJ's journey, the changing landscapes and the sheer range of things to do still give it enormous appeal. My 9/10 comes primarily from how strong San Andreas remains, with welcome improvements making the return more comfortable. It also reflects a lingering feeling that a classic this important deserved a more comprehensive renewal.

The journey still carries it

The progression from familiar neighbourhoods into a much larger world remains the defining attraction. Moving between the cities and countryside gives the adventure a scale that feels connected to CJ's changing circumstances. It is the kind of structure that turns a map into a journey. That foundation survives the change in presentation.

The room to shape the character matters as well. Appearance, activities and the freedom to wander give the main story a personal setting. I do not want San Andreas reduced to a sequence of iconic missions. The pleasure of existing between those missions is part of why the game means so much to me.

Useful improvements, familiar limits

Modernised targeting and controls make returning easier. The updated presentation also offers a different way to see places that have become deeply familiar. Those changes are meaningful, particularly when they reduce the distance between wanting to attempt something and getting the game to cooperate.

But there is a difference between making an old experience more comfortable and reconsidering all the areas that could benefit from reconstruction. The underlying shape of the missions and interactions remains rooted in the original. That is understandable for a remaster, yet it also puts a ceiling on the transformation.

I wanted more attention to the complete experience, not merely a stronger impression of visual freshness. A work with this much personality needs an update that feels equally committed to its movement, atmosphere and smaller interactions. When those ambitions are uneven, the original's greatness ends up doing much of the work.

Verdict

This remains a masterpiece to play through, and the improvements give me real reasons to enjoy returning. It falls a point below the original in my personal ratings because I judge the update by what it adds as well as what it inherits. At 9/10, this is an excellent adventure housed in a remaster that could have pushed further. San Andreas still deserves the affection. I simply wanted its renewal to match the scale of that legacy.

Score: 9/10
