Today we're taking a quick look at Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. Like a lot of you, I grew up with Aang and Korra, so I had massive expectations for a 1v1 fighter set in this universe. But after spending some serious time grinding it out, I have to be completely honest with you all: it's a huge mixed bag.
Here is the breakdown of why this game is sitting right in the middle of the road.
The Good: The Bending Flows
Let's start with the positives. When you are actually in a match, the game feels great.
Solid Combat: The three-button attack system combined with the high-mobility dashes and glides makes the bending combat feel fast and fluid.
Great Netcode: The online multiplayer runs on robust rollback netcode with solid cross-play, so your ranked matches are going to feel smooth.
Beautiful Animations: The 2D sprites and particle effects for the elements look incredible in motion.
The Bad: Where is the Content?
Unfortunately, the game heavily fumbles everything outside of the core online fighting.
Tiny Base Roster: The launch roster is way too small. It genuinely feels like they stripped out fan favorites just to sell them back to us later. Holding back legends like Uncle Iroh and Lin Beifong for the "Year 1 DLC Roadmap" feels like a massive cash grab.
Boring Single-Player: The Story Mode is just a sloppy, multiversal excuse to throw Aang, Korra, and Kyoshi into the same timeline. You can beat it in a few hours, and there is zero replay value. Arcade mode is just as barebones.
Cheap Presentation: While the fights look great, the cutscenes are rough. Whenever a non-playable character shows up in the story, they literally look like cheap cardboard cutouts or static paper displays. For a franchise as big as Avatar, that is unacceptable.
The Final Verdict: 5/10
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has the skeleton of a fantastic competitive fighter, but it is completely starved for content. The aggressive DLC model and the nonexistent single-player longevity completely drag down the amazing combat mechanics.
Unless you are a hardcore fighting game grinder who only cares about online ranked lobbies, I highly recommend waiting for a deep sale or the inevitable "Definitive Edition."
